The Clarke family originally resided in the village of Leadenham in the County of Lincolnshire in the coastal East Midlands of England. The family recorded a four generation pedigree headed by a William Clarke, of Leadenham in the Heralds’ Visitation of the County of Lincolnshire that took place during the years 1562–1564. The family is said to have settled at a later date at Handsworth in the County of Staffordshire.
